Description

For the UK’s major cities to switch to a low carbon economy, while remaining globally competitive, they will have to be resource efficient - and increasingly self-sufficient - in energy.

This will require the use of ‘secondary’ sources of energy, including heat currently ejected into the environment (waste heat), to deliver lower energy costs, lower emissions, and increased resilience.

According to an ADE report, UK cities collectively waste more heat than that required by every home in the UK (Levelling the playing field: Unlocking heat infrastructure investment, June 2016). So there is, in theory, a significant potential for recovering waste heat from high-temperature sources as well as rethinking how to use lower-grade heat from cooling buildings such as supermarkets and data-centres. The key to this is transportation of the energy via heat networks, or district heating schemes. This event shows successful examples and case studies from the UK and abroad.

Speakers at the event include:

  • Guy Boulby, Senior Head of Heat Networks Policy and HNIP Pilot, UK Department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy (BEIS)

  • Peter North, Senior Manager, Sustainable Energy Programme (Delivery) at the Greater London Authority

  • Nicholas Boot-Handford, Senior Project Manager [Cooling] for Transport for London Underground

  • Professor Graeme Maidment, Professor of Refrigeration and Air Conditioning, School of the Built Environment and Architecture, Associate Director of Research and Head of The London Doctoral Academy, Research, Enterprise and Innovation, London South Bank University

  • Crispin Matson, UK Manager-Director, Ramboll Group

with brief updates from:

  • Luke Davis, Senior Manager for Energy and Environment Change, Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC)
  • David Reid, Business Development Manager, Scottish Development International
